Workshop 1 : Many Facets of Open Source Tools in System Administration Context

A session at Malaysia Open Source Conference 2017 (MOSCMY 2017)

Thursday 18th May, 2017 2:00pm to 4:00pm (SMT)

System administration is a wide ranged area which caters infrastructure handling , log analysis, security aware practice and common sense. Open source based tools are possibly among the favorite choice due to the nature of the openness. My talk will cover from the basic to intermediate level use of the open source tools in the area of system administration which could possibly save our time in dealing with the routine task. For example the use of Ansible for the configuration management tool, tmux/screen use and git.

Session 10 : Online Accessibility Mapping Project

A session at Malaysia Open Source Conference 2017 (MOSCMY 2017)
Thursday 18th May, 2017 12:00pm to 12:45pm (SMT)

Challenges Foundation will run a project to make cycling accessible for children and persons with disabilities. The Challenges Tandem Cycle 4 Change Project will be launched in 2017 with a  National Recycle Bicycle campaign to collect used and abandoned bicycles in the community to be recycled into our tandem bicycles.

One activity of this project involves street mapping for location of abandoned bicycles as well as donated bicycles from public. We hope to use OpenStreetMap,  for this project to get public to pin the location of these bicycles and we can then send volunteers to collect them when we see a cluster of pins.

The other use of the street mapping will be to map accessible cycling spots that are also safe for us to organise cycling trips for youth and children with disabilities. I hope to start this project in April and hopefully by May we would be able to report some success or progress. If not , I see the presentation as an opportunity to initiate a Call for Action to delegates at this conference to help us move this project forward

Session 12 : The FreeBSD - Prime

As a developer, Sysadmin and sometimes a day to day user we come up with the words Linux and Unix. Unfortunately, although we will find a handful of Open Source Linux OS it is hard to find a true UNIX derivative in the Open Source arena. Till today the only fully open source UNIX derivative remaining is the *BSD or Berkley System Development.

It highly differs in structure, stability and philosophy compared to another Linux OS. This presentation briefly tries to explain about the history of BSD systems, structure, features and usage in our day to day life. Additionally, although starting with generic BSD family we will more likely be emphasizing on The FreeBSD Project.

Session 9 : To R or not to R: Experience from Using R in a Medical School

A session at Malaysia Open Source Conference 2017 (MOSCMY 2017)

Thursday 18th May, 2017 12:00pm to 12:45pm (SMT)

R is a freely available language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. It has over 10200 packages to cater for the needs of statisticians, data scientists, epidemiologists, ecologists, econometricians and many more people.

At the School of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, we informally introduced R in late 2013 and formally integrated R into our academic syllabus in 2015. We use RStudio as the IDE for R though Revolution R is another popular IDE. In the statistic class, we teach students to read data, perform statistical analysis and produce reports in R.

Using R makes learning more exciting and using R-markdown helps students produce nice reports. Our experience shows R requires steeper learning curve but the challenge and the versatility of R make the students more engaged and the learning more effective. We feel that academicians should promote the use of R in their classes.
